At
the mouth of the Kromme River - lies the pretty holiday village of St.
Francis Bay. The Kromme River, navigable for 10 km, winds its way down
to a magnificent marina where the gracious white walled thatched homes
are reflected in the quiet water of the canals. The architecture of the
place is one of its kind in South Africa with all the houses having thatch
roofs - except for the part at the harbour which is built in a mediterranean
stile.
The
magnificent white, gently sloping beach provides safe bathing as well
as some of the finest rock and surf angling on the East Coast. The bay
also caters for surfers from all over the world being famous for its waves.
A
Small Harbour lies in a sheltered nook of the bay and provides a picturesque
setting and is the centre for calamari fishing boats and an ideal spot
for launching your boat.
St
Francis Lighthouse Marks one of the 'corners' of the African coast. It
was erected to warn ships of the presence of a reef that protrudes beyond
Sea Point, almost a kilometer out to sea.
Not
to be missed is the beautiful Crystal Pools in the Sand River. The water
in the Sand River flows underground, over the hard rocky substrate that
underlines the dunes. After heavy rains, the water table rises to form
Crystal Pools.
Take
a boat cruise and discover the abundant bird and marine life including
whales, dolphins and penguins.
About
10 kilometres south of St. Francis Bay lies Cape St. Francis with its
impressive lighthouse from 1878, which is open to visitors.
St. Francis
Bay offers several good hotels, B&Bs, guest houses and restaurants.
For the golfer
it provides an excellent 18-hole golf course within the village.
